Common Children’s Dental Emergencies

Dental emergencies can happen anywhere, even in the comfort of your home. Knowledge of the right first aid steps is important to relieve pain and help your child. We have listed the most common children’s dental emergencies and how to deal with them.

Toothache

  • Make sure that there is no food stuck in your child’s teeth, particularly in the aching area. Help your child brush and floss his/her teeth thoroughly.
  • Rinse your child’s mouth with antiseptic mouthwash or salt-water (1/2 teaspoon of salt to eight ounces of lukewarm water). Let your child gargle with this solution several times.
  • Do not give aspirin to your child nor put aspirin to the affected area as this can cause a chemical burn. To relieve pain, apply clove oil using a clean cotton swab.
  • If there is swelling, apply a cold compress.
  • Visit your dentist immediately.

Knocked Out Tooth

  • Secure the tooth immediately. Pick it up by the crown and do not touch the root.
  • If the tooth is dirty, rinse it with clean water for no more than 10 seconds. Do not scrape, brush or scrub. Wash it only if the tooth is dirty; otherwise, don’t do anything to it.
  • For a knocked out permanent tooth, re-insert it in place and bite down gently on a piece of clean cloth.
  • For a knocked out baby tooth, let your dentist handle the reimplantation. Do not reinsert it yourself as this can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath.
  • Soak the tooth in milk, saline solution, or saliva on your way to the dentist.
  • Go to the dentist within 30 minutes of the injury.

Bitten Tongue/Lips

  • Rinse your child’s mouth with clean water.
  • Press a clean absorbent material to the injured area to stop the bleeding.
  • If the bleeding continues, hold ice over it for 10-15 minutes. This will reduce swelling, control blood flow, and relieve pain.
  • Visit your dentist immediately.

The tongue, lips, gums, and cheeks are the soft tissues in the mouth. They are sensitive and bleed easily. If bleeding continues after administering the first aid steps, this could mean that the damage is serious.

Broken Braces

  • Using a clean eraser end of a pencil, gently move the offending wire in position.
  • Rinse your child’s mouth to remove remaining broken pieces.
  • Cover the edges of the broken braces with gauze or cotton on your way to the dentist.
  • Visit your dentist immediately.
