How to maintain a pearly white smile all summer long

Whilst you enjoy the hot weather this summer make sure you maintain your oral hygiene routine.

Treats such as ice cream and icy poles may cool you down on a hot summers day, but the high sugar content breaks down the enamel on you teeth, which causes tooth decay and other dental issues.

Here at Smiles Nambour, we’ve come up with a few tips and tricks to help you start the year off with perfect oral health.

Follow good oral hygiene

This might seem straightforward but oral hygiene includes more than just the appearance of your teeth. This summer, ensure your brushing with fluoride toothpaste for two minutes twice a day and ensure you are using correct brushing technique.

Following a good oral hygiene routine also includes following a healthy, balanced diet and avoid staining foods such as coffee, some alcohol and berries, just to name a few.

Keep to a teeth-friendly diet

It’s easier than ever to still enjoy some treats while looking after your teeth from dental issues such as decay and staining by following these tips:

  • Try herbal infusions instead of tea and coffee. There are a variety of different delicious and refreshing flavours
  • If you’re a Red wine lover why not switch to a white, sparkling rose or even a Moscato? If you can give up the bittery goodness then make sure to drink water in between glasses of wine to remove any residual acid on your teeth.
  • If you’re big on snacking why not swap sugary treats for healthy fruits such as strawberries and citrus fruits to lift minor stains, apples, carrots and celery to stimulate saliva, and calcium rich dairy products to strengthen your teeth.

Maintain regular dental appointments

Although summer is meant for catching up with friends and family and enjoy the day in the hot sun, if you’re due for a dental check up don’t wait till your holiday is over!

It is recommended to see a dentist every 6 months and if your check-up appointment falls during your holidays, then make an appointment before you go to avoid any dental emergencies while your spending your days lying on the beach enjoying the sunshine.

Summer holidays are a time of relaxing, however your dental hygiene is important to maintain by following these simple tips and tricks we’ve listed your sure to start the new year with your best smile.
